1,000-MILE Walk/Run Challenge

Date published: 2022-01-07 21:46:05

The journey of 1,000 miles begins with a single step. . .the Walk/Run Challenge started with 1,000 miles

The Walk/Run Challenge started with a crazy idea I had out of the blue to run/walk 1,000 miles in a year. I posted the idea on Facebook and invited my friends and family to join me. Some people balked at the idea, “What, ME, run 1,000 miles?!?!” while others immediately rose to the challenge. We walked, we ran, and we posted our pictures, screenshots of tracking apps, and stories on the platform, sharing tales of triumphs and sometimes even discouragement. But in the end, many of us completed the challenge with a sense of accomplishment that we had never felt before.

Now, your first question might be, why on Earth would someone commit to joining (and actually walking/running) a 1,000-mile challenge? I know, I know. . .but hear me out. The first, and most simple answer, is that exercise improves your health. If you commit to this challenge, you will not only see gains in your physical health, but you will also notice that you are gaining confidence and mental resiliency as you complete each mile. As always, (and especially if you are over age 40), consult with your medical provider before starting any exercise program. Once cleared, take the leap of faith and never look back! Your motivation will become contagious, and you will be proud of yourself for each mile you complete and every drop of sweat you wipe from your brow. Not to mention, that sense of accomplishment I mentioned earlier will definitely be yours once you complete even your first few miles. Trust me on this!

In the first year and a half, we will set up cascading 1,000-mile challenges each month and condensed versions of the challenges throughout the year. To make these challenges more efficient and reduce administrative overhead, we now have only one 1,000-mile challenge annually with smaller races and challenges. These smaller races will be scheduled during various holidays/observances throughout the year to raise funds for a multitude of non-profits that provide critical services for our communities. Our goal is to continue to move for a cause and help those in need. So head on over to the Challenge page to register for your next challenge!
